What is dynamic number insertion?

Dynamic number insertion
Dynamic number insertion replaces the phone number displayed on a web page with a tracking number chosen by how the visitor arrived, so a call can be matched back to the source.

What dynamic number insertion means in practice

A script reads the visitor's referrer or campaign tags and writes the matching number into the page.

Pools of numbers make it work at the visitor level. Each session borrows a number for long enough that a call within the next half hour or so is attributed to that visit.

The pool size is the cost and the constraint. More simultaneous visitors need more numbers, and traffic spikes cause attribution to blur.

It fails quietly for anyone who copies the number, saves it, and rings three days later.

What people get wrong

Sizing a number pool from your traffic

Say your site gets 1,200 visits a day and the busiest hour sees 110 of them. Your tracking vendor holds a number for each visitor for 30 minutes, so a call in that window can be tied to the visit.

At 110 visitors an hour, about 55 arrive in any 30-minute window. Each is holding a number, so you need at least 55 in the pool at peak. Vendors usually suggest headroom on top, and 65 to 70 would be a sensible order here.

Order 20 to save money and here's what happens at 11:00 on a Tuesday. Visitor 21 arrives and gets a number that visitor 3 was shown 12 minutes ago. Then visitor 3 calls. The system credits the call to visitor 21, who came from a different ad. Your report now says the wrong campaign produced a lead, and nothing flags it.

Check the swap in a private window

You can verify the setup yourself in ten minutes. Open a private browser window and visit your site by typing the address. Note the phone number shown. Then open a new private window and arrive by clicking one of your ads. The number should be different.

Now check what didn't change. Tap or hover over the number and look at the link behind it. A common bug swaps the visible digits on the page but leaves the tap-to-call link behind them pointing at the main number. Mobile visitors see one number and dial another, and your mobile calls all go untracked.

View the page source and search for your main number. It should still appear in the structured data and in the footer address block, untouched by the script.

Last, load the page on a slow connection. Your real number should show first and the swap should follow. A blank space where the number belongs is the worst possible result.

How GreetKeeper handles it

Every number in the pool can forward to GreetKeeper, so the tracking setup sits upstream and the answering behavior stays the same.

Transcripts give you a second signal. Callers often say what they were looking at, which no number pool can capture.

Each number can have its own greeting under one account. Keep in mind that a pool of rotating numbers is usually better served by one shared greeting than by a dozen.

Number insertion questions

How many numbers does a pool need?

Enough to cover your concurrent visitors with room to spare. Undersized pools recycle numbers too fast and attribute calls to the wrong session.

Does it work for organic visitors?

Yes, the referrer identifies search traffic. Distinguishing individual keywords is much less reliable than it used to be.

What if someone bookmarks the tracking number?

It keeps working as long as the number is live, and the attribution becomes meaningless after the session window. That is the normal cost of the technique.
