What if two people call at once?

- Both get answered, at the same time, by separate instances of the assistant. Concurrency is the clearest structural advantage an AI receptionist has over any staffed line: a person can hold one conversation, and software holds as many as arrive. It matters most on exactly the days you are busiest, when a human front desk is already on a call and the second caller hears a ring-out.
The longer answer
A human answering service solves this with headcount, and headcount is finite. A rush puts callers in a queue, and a queue is where people hang up.
Your own front desk has the same limit and no queue at all. The second call rings out or drops to voicemail.
An assistant answers both immediately, and neither caller knows the other exists.
Where concurrency still runs into limits
Your phone line may cap it before the assistant does. A single analogue line carries one call at a time no matter what is answering it, and the second caller gets a busy signal at the carrier.
VoIP lines usually allow several simultaneous channels, but the number is a setting on your account. Check it, because it is the real ceiling.
Transfers are the other pinch point. Six callers can be answered at once, and if all six ask for the same person, five are waiting for a human again.
Bookings against the same slot are the subtle one. Two callers offered the same Tuesday at nine seconds apart need a buffer rule, or one of them gets a confirmation for a slot that has gone.
Monday, 8:00am, at a pediatric dental office
Say you run a pediatric dental office and your lines open at 8:00 on Monday. Parents who spent the weekend with a child's toothache all call in the same quarter of an hour. Between 8:00 and 8:15, eleven calls arrive, and at the busiest moment several are in progress at once.
One coordinator at the desk can finish about four of those calls in fifteen minutes. The other seven ring out or hit voicemail, and some of those parents phone the next practice while they wait for a callback.

Forwarding itself is a common culprit. Some landline plans forward only one call at a time unless you add a multi-path forwarding option, so the second caller gets a busy signal while the first is still talking. Your phone company can tell you what your line allows.
Mobiles behave differently. When you're already on a call, a second caller goes to call waiting, and what happens next depends on whether you set forwarding for the busy case as well as the no-answer case. Set both, then run the three-phone test once more while you're on a call yourself.
