What is per-call pricing?

Per-call pricing
Per-call pricing is a billing model for answering services in which you pay a set amount for each call answered, whatever its length, instead of paying for the minutes the calls take.

What per-call pricing means in practice

Answering services bill in one of three units. Per-minute plans charge for talk time, so a long call costs more than a short one. Per-call plans charge the same for a 40-second booking and a six-minute enquiry.

A third model counts people instead of calls. Goodcall prices per unique caller and charges $0.50 for each additional unique customer past the plan, as of September 2026.

What you gain with per-call pricing is a bill you can predict. Count last month's answered calls, subtract the allowance, and multiply what's left by the overage rate. Minutes are harder to forecast, since one caller who needs directions twice can use the time of five quick bookings.

Rates vary a lot between vendors. Smith.ai also bills by the call and lists a Pro tier at $150 a month covering 75 to 300 calls, as of September 2026. Read each vendor's definition of a billable call, because that line shapes your bill as much as the rate does.

What people get wrong

How GreetKeeper handles it

GreetKeeper prices per call on every plan and publishes the overage rate next to each one. Starter is $49 a month for 200 answered calls, then $0.45 a call. Professional is $149 for 750 calls, then $0.35. Scale is $349 for 2,000 calls, then $0.25.

Here's a worked month. A shop on Starter that answers 260 calls pays $49 plus 60 extra calls at $0.45 each, and a six-minute call costs the same as a one-minute call.

Very short calls, robocalls and calls it screens out don't count toward your plan. Booking is included on every plan, and each plan starts with a 14-day free trial with no card needed.

Per-call pricing questions

Is per-call or per-minute pricing cheaper for an answering service?

Per-call pricing costs less the longer your calls run, because a six-minute call is billed the same as a one-minute call. To compare, price last month's call log both ways: answered calls times the per-call rate, and total minutes times the per-minute rate. Include the overage rates, since a busy month is where the gap shows.

What counts as a call on a per-call plan?

A call counts when the service answers it, under that vendor's own definition of a billable call. Read the definition before you compare rates. A plan that bills hang-ups and spam costs more than its rate suggests.

What is an overage rate on a per-call plan?

An overage rate is the price of each call past your monthly allowance. On a per-call plan it's one flat figure per extra call, so a month that runs 50 calls over costs 50 times that rate. Check it before you sign, because it decides what your busiest month costs.

Is per-call pricing the same as pay-per-call?

No. Pay-per-call is an advertising model, where an advertiser pays a publisher for each inbound call its ads produce. Per-call pricing is what an answering service charges you for answering your own calls. The names are close, but the money flows the other way.
