What silence detection means in practice
One threshold does a lot of damage in both directions. Set it short and the assistant cuts people off mid-thought.
Set it long and every exchange gains an awkward gap, which is the single most common reason a call feels slow.
Around half a second to a second is the usual range, and no single value is right for every sentence.
People pause differently depending on what they are saying. Reciting a phone number produces gaps that mean nothing, and a fixed timer treats them as the end of the sentence.
What people get wrong
Hold on, let me find my card
Say a caller is booking a dental cleaning and gets asked for her insurance member number. She says, hold on, let me find my card. Then comes eleven seconds of rummaging through a bag.
A simple silence timer has no idea what to do with that. After a second or so it decides she's finished and replies to hold on as if it were an answer. Five seconds later it asks if she's still there. By the time she reads the number, the assistant is mid-sentence, and the two collide.
A person at the front desk handles this without thought. Hold on is an instruction, and the right reply is sure, take your time, followed by patience. Good voice systems treat phrases like one sec and let me check the same way, and stretch the wait to 15 or 20 seconds.
Silence on a phone line is rarely silent
The name suggests a line goes quiet. Real calls don't. There's a TV in the background, a truck idling, a toddler, wind across a cell phone mic. A detector that waits for the volume to drop will wait forever on those calls, and the assistant seems to freeze.
So modern systems listen for the absence of speech, whatever the noise level. That job belongs to voice activity detection, which is trained to tell a human voice from everything else. It beats a volume threshold and still isn't perfect. A radio talk show in the background is speech, as far as it can tell.
Answering machine detection is a different thing again. Outbound dialers use it to guess whether a person or a voicemail greeting picked up. It doesn't apply to a line that only answers calls.
To test any of this, call from the noisiest place you can find. Stand next to a running dishwasher or a busy road, answer a question, then stop talking. Count how long the reply takes compared with a quiet room.
