How to forward Cox Business calls to GreetKeeper

Cox Business keeps four forwarding rules in MyAccount, and a *72 code on the handset. Set the rule, choose the rings, and test.

The four forwarding modes on Cox Business

Cox Business Voice sets forwarding as rules under Call Settings in MyAccount. Each of the four modes has its own switch, and the Forward All Calls rule also works from the phone with a star code.

ModeCox rule in MyAccountFrom the phoneWhat forwards
All callsForward All Calls*72, then the number; *73 to stopEvery call, while your desk phone gives one short ring
BusyForward When BusySet onlineCalls that arrive while the line is in use

UnreachableForward When Not ReachableSet onlineCalls to a line Cox can't reach

Cox also offers Call Forwarding Selective for a list of callers. Which rules you see depends on the service package on your account, and Profile Owners and Profile Admins can change the rules for every number.

Rules and codes read on Cox Business support: Changing Call Forwarding Rules Online, https://www.cox.com/business/support/changing-call-forwarding-rules-online.html; Changing the Forward When No Answer Rule, https://www.cox.com/business/support/changing-the-forward-when-no-answer-rule.html; Using Call Forwarding, https://www.cox.com/business/support/using-call-forwarding.html; all on 25 September 2026.

Set up forwarding on Cox Business

Five steps, from copying the number to switching it off again.

  1. Grab your GreetKeeper number

Copy the local number from your GreetKeeper account. You'll type it into Cox's Forward To field.

  2. Open Call Forwarding in MyAccount

Log in at myaccount-business.cox.com and click the Voice icon under Services. Expand Call Settings and click Call Forwarding. An admin changing someone else's number goes through User & System Management first.

  3. Switch on the rule and set the rings

Turn Forward When No Answer on and click Edit. Enter your GreetKeeper number in Forward To, pick a Rings Before value, and click Save. Repeat for Forward When Busy or Not Reachable if you want them.

  4. Call in and let it ring

From a mobile, call your Cox number and let it run past the rings you chose. GreetKeeper answers and books the caller, and the transcript and summary reach you by email.

  5. Turn a rule off

Flip the rule's switch off in MyAccount and save. If you used *72 on the phone, dial *73 and listen for the confirmation tone.

Which Cox rule fits your business

Think of an auto repair shop with a Cox line at the service counter. The writer is under a hood half the morning. Forward When No Answer at four rings lets the counter try first, then GreetKeeper books the drop-off and captures the car and the problem.

A small law office often wants Forward When Busy. The receptionist is on a long intake call, and the next caller would hear a busy signal. GreetKeeper answers calls that arrive together at the same time, so both new clients get a greeting.

Forward When Not Reachable is the storm rule. If the office loses service, Cox sends the calls on, and GreetKeeper keeps taking bookings until the line is back.

Forward All Calls, or *72 at the desk, suits a closed week. Cox lets you keep making outgoing calls while it's on, and the desk phone gives one short ring for each call it forwards.

Cox Business rules worth knowing

Cox can't switch forwarding on while your phone service is down or part of a network outage. Set the Not Reachable rule ahead of time, not during the storm.

Cox's phone steps say to dial the Forward To number exactly as you'd call it. A local number may need only seven digits, and a long-distance one needs a 1 and the area code.

Rings Before (1) doesn't show in the dropdown, because Cox treats it the same as None. Pick None to forward at once, or two or more to ring first.

When *72 is set, you hear a stutter dial tone and then a regular one. That's Cox confirming the forward is live.

Cox Business forwarding questions

How many rings before Cox Business forwards a call?

You choose, from none up to 20 rings, in the Rings Before dropdown of the Forward When No Answer rule.

Yes. Cox's help page says your phone can still make outgoing calls while forwarding is on. It gives one short ring each time it forwards a call.
