Ruby vs Abby Connect for law firms

Ruby and Abby Connect both put live receptionists on a law firm's phone, and both bill by the minute. Ruby's plans run from $250 a month for 50 minutes to $1,725 for 500. Abby Connect's run from $165 for 50 Abby Minutes to $1,380 for 500. One Abby Minute buys a minute with a person or two minutes with its AI.

That exchange rate is the real difference. Ruby charges one rate for every minute, with the same team and features on every plan. Abby Connect lets you send some calls to its AI at half the minute cost and keep the rest with people.

Ruby fits a firm that wants a person on every call and a single, simple unit, with no setup fees. Abby Connect fits a firm happy to route routine calls to AI and save its human minutes for new matters. Neither prints an overage rate, so ask both. Pages read September 2026.

A small firm's month of calls

Picture a two-attorney family-law practice. In a month it takes 25 new-matter calls that run about eight minutes each, and 40 existing-client calls of about two minutes. That's 200 minutes of intake and 80 minutes of routine calls, 280 in all.

On Ruby, all 280 minutes are receptionist minutes. That's past the 200-minute plan at $720 and inside the 500-minute plan at $1,725. You'd choose between the bigger plan and an overage rate Ruby doesn't print.

On Abby Connect with people on every call, 280 Abby Minutes lands between the 200 plan at $599 and the 500 plan at $1,380. Send the 40 routine calls to its AI instead, and those 80 minutes cost 40 Abby Minutes. Your month becomes 240 Abby Minutes, still past 200.

What Ruby gives every plan

Ruby's four plans are $250 for 50 minutes, $395 for 100, $720 for 200 and $1,725 for 500. It says the only difference between plans is the minutes, so a solo attorney gets the same team and features as a larger firm.

Every plan lists 24/7 answering, including after-hours, weekends and holidays, plus robocall filtering and flexible call forwarding. Scheduling and client intake are optional features you add. Ruby states there are no fees for activation, onboarding, setup or customization.

How Abby Connect's minutes stretch

Abby Connect's smaller plans are Starter at $165 for 50 Abby Minutes and Essential at $329 for 100. Professional is $599 for 200, and Growth is $1,380 for 500. You decide call by call whether a person or its AI handles it.

An AI-handled minute costs half an Abby Minute. So Essential's 100 Abby Minutes can be 100 minutes with people, 200 with AI, or a mix. For a firm, the useful split is often by call type: new matters to a person, hours and directions to AI.

Questions to put to both before you sign

Ask each one for the rate on a minute past your plan, since neither prints it. Ask how a call is rounded, and whether the time spent writing up your message counts.

Then ask how intake works. Give each your conflict-check questions and a practice-area routing rule, and ask them to run a test call. Read the message you get back as if it were a real new matter.

A per-call option for the same firm

Disclosure: GreetKeeper is our product, and it appears only in this section. It's an AI receptionist billed per answered call, so an eight-minute intake counts once. Starter is $49 a month for 200 answered calls, then $0.45 a call. Professional is $149 for 750 at $0.35, and Scale is $349 for 2,000 at $0.25.

The 65-call month above fits Starter. You write the intake questions, and the answers arrive as question-and-answer pairs in a signed webhook with the summary and a transcript link. Consultations book into Google Calendar or Outlook while the caller is on the line.

When a caller asks for an attorney, GreetKeeper transfers to your team and tries a second number you nominate if the first isn't picked up. Its disclosure setting announces the assistant at the start of each call. There's no setup fee, and every plan starts with a 14-day free trial, every feature on and no card.

StarterFor a single location taking calls one line at a time.$49200$0.45 per call

ScaleFor busy phones and longer opening hours.$3492,000$0.25 per call

Questions people ask about this comparison

Which is cheaper for a law firm, Ruby or Abby Connect?

On printed prices, Abby Connect is lower at each size: $165 against $250 for 50 minutes, and $599 against $720 for 200. Abby's AI minutes count half, which stretches the plan further. Neither prints its overage rate, so ask both for it in writing.

What is an Abby Minute?

Abby Connect's own billing unit. One Abby Minute is one minute with a human receptionist or two minutes with its AI. So 50 Abby Minutes on Starter can be 50 human minutes, 100 AI minutes or a mix, for $165 a month.

Does Ruby charge setup fees?

No. Ruby's pricing page states there are no additional or hidden fees for activation, onboarding, setup or customization, read September 2026. Scheduling and client intake are optional features on top of the plan.

Can I send only new-matter calls to a person?

On Abby Connect, yes: you choose per call whether a person or its AI handles it. Ruby puts a receptionist on every call, with AI as an included extra. Either way, the forwarding mode is set at your carrier or phone system.
