Smith.ai vs AnswerConnect for small law firms

Smith.ai bills a law firm per call and prints every tier. AnswerConnect bills per minute and prints no price. Smith.ai's free tier covers 25 calls, then $3.00 a call. Its Pro plan is $150 a month for 75 to 300 calls, at $2.00 to $2.17 each. AnswerConnect gives you a figure through a quote form.

For a firm, the unit matters more than the headline. A new-matter intake call can run ten minutes or more. On a per-call meter, that long call costs what a two-minute callback costs. On AnswerConnect's per-minute meter, every minute of the intake counts, and so does the after-call work a receptionist does to write up your message.

Smith.ai fits a firm that wants to price a month before any sales call, and whose intake calls run long. AnswerConnect fits a firm that wants a human-led desk and will take a quote. Its help centre states the billing rules in full. Both were read on the vendors' own sites in September 2026.

Why the billing unit decides a law firm's bill

Law-firm calls split into two kinds. New-matter calls are long, because the caller tells the story and answers your conflict-check questions. Existing-client calls are short: a status check, a court date, a request for a callback.

A per-call meter charges both kinds the same. A per-minute meter charges the long ones most, and the long ones are the calls you want. So before you compare prices, pull a month of your call log and split it into those two groups. The split tells you which meter your firm pays less on.

Smith.ai's own pitch, read in September 2026, is to answer, qualify and win more business with an AI receptionist. AnswerConnect describes itself as 24/7 human-led answering. That's the second difference, and it's the one you'll feel on the calls themselves.

What Smith.ai prints for each tier

Smith.ai publishes three levels. A free tier at $0 covers 25 calls, and each call after that is $3.00. The Pro plan is $150 a month and covers 75 to 300 calls, at $2.00 to $2.17 a call. Enterprise is $500 a month for 300 to more than 1,000 calls, at $1.60 to $1.67 each.

You can read the overage off the same page, and the rate falls as the tier rises. For a firm, that means a busy intake month is a sum you can do in advance. Multiply your expected calls by the tier's rate and you're close to the invoice.

Call length never enters that sum. A personal-injury caller who talks for fifteen minutes is one call. So is the courier who rings to check your office hours.

What AnswerConnect publishes instead of a price

AnswerConnect's plans page describes the service and shows no dollar figure. You get a plan price by filling in a form and taking a call.

Its billing help centre is detailed, though. A billed minute covers the whole time spent handling your call, including the after-call work of processing the message. Time a caller spends in the queue isn't billed. Past 30 seconds, a call bills by the whole minute, rounded up, so 1 minute 25 seconds uses 2 minutes.

Your first 30 calls under 30 seconds in each billing cycle are free, and that covers wrong numbers, hang-ups and spam. Go past your allowance and extra minutes bill at your plan's rate, with alerts at 80% and 100%. Unused minutes don't carry over to the next cycle.

One more line matters to a small firm. A setup fee exists, and when it's waived, it still shows on your invoice with a matching credit. Ask for it in writing with your quote.

One month of intake, counted each way

Picture a three-attorney firm with 80 calls in a month. Thirty are new matters that run about ten and a half minutes each. Thirty are client callbacks of about a minute and a half. Twenty are hang-ups or wrong numbers under 30 seconds.

On Smith.ai's page, that's 80 calls, which sits inside the Pro range of 75 to 300. You price it from the per-call rate on the page. Ask Smith.ai whether a 20-second wrong number counts as a full call, since that's where the two meters differ most.

On AnswerConnect's rules, the 20 short calls are free. Each intake rounds up to 11 minutes, which is 330 minutes. Each callback rounds up to 2, which adds 60 more. You're at 390 billed minutes before any after-call work is counted, and the price per minute arrives with your quote.

Where GreetKeeper fits for a firm

Disclosure: GreetKeeper is our product, and this is the only place it appears on this page. It's an AI receptionist billed per answered call, with every rate printed. Starter is $49 a month for 200 calls and $0.45 a call after that. Professional is $149 for 750 at $0.35, and Scale is $349 for 2,000 at $0.25.

You write the intake questions, conflict checks included, and GreetKeeper asks them on every new-matter call. The answers arrive as question-and-answer pairs in a signed webhook, next to the summary and a link to the transcript. Consultations book into Google Calendar or Outlook while the caller is on the line, and the time is read back first.

When a caller asks for an attorney, it transfers to your team. If that line isn't picked up, it tries a second number you nominate. Its disclosure setting announces the assistant at the start of each call, which is what Maine's §1500-DD and Utah's rules for regulated occupations look for. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial, every feature on and no card.

StarterFor a single location taking calls one line at a time.$49200$0.45 per call
ProfessionalBooking, routing and transfers included, not an add-on.$149750$0.35 per call
ScaleFor busy phones and longer opening hours.$3492,000$0.25 per call

Questions people ask about this comparison

Is Smith.ai or AnswerConnect cheaper for a law firm?

Only Smith.ai prints a price, so you can price one side today. Smith.ai's Pro plan is $150 a month for 75 to 300 calls, at $2.00 to $2.17 a call. AnswerConnect quotes by form. Ask it for the per-minute rate, then run your intake minutes, rounded up, against that rate.

Does AnswerConnect bill the time spent writing up my message?

Yes. Its help centre says a billed minute covers the total time to handle a call, including the after-call work to process your message. Queue time before a receptionist picks up isn't billed. Calls past 30 seconds round up to the whole minute.

Does a long intake call cost more on Smith.ai?

No. Smith.ai bills per call, so a 15-minute new-matter call is one call, the same as a one-minute callback. The rate per call depends on your tier: $3.00 past the free 25, $2.00 to $2.17 on Pro, and $1.60 to $1.67 on Enterprise.

Can I send only after-hours calls to either service?

Yes. Both answer a number you forward to them, and AnswerConnect's services page lists forwarding on a set schedule and time-based routing. The forwarding mode and the ring delay are set at your carrier or phone system, so you can send nights and weekends only.
